Happy Wednesday friends! I don’t know about you but I am super excited that tomorrow is Thanksgiving! I’m hosting a few family members and starting to get everything ready for the meal. What are your Thanksgiving plans?
Speaking of delicious food, I was recently introduced to Atlanta made Treehouse Milk. Founders Bess Weyandt & Kate Carter, regular farmers market shoppers and organic food consumers, were disappointed to find that there wasn’t a convenient, local, natural alternative to the watered-down and chemical-laden almond milk found at stores. They decided to experiment in their own kitchen and started whipping up drinks (from deliciously pure almond milk to sweet Georgia pecan milk). They love sharing their passion with others and look forward to bringing you, their Atlanta neighbors, the delights of the plant-based milk world coupled with the convenience of old-school milk delivery.
I was fortunate enough to try Treehouse Almond Milk and Pecan Milk. Both milks tasted incredibly fresh and crisp but the pecan milk was my favorite. It had a slight sweetness to it that makes it a more unique milk. I think it would be perfect to use in your smoothies because it will add a natural sweetness to them. I plan on making some acai berry bowls this weekend with it!
Interested in trying one of these delicious milks? You can find Treehouse Milk at the following places-
Grant Park Farmers Market (every other Sunday)
Morningside Farmers Market (every other Saturday)
Dulce Vegan Bakery
Spiller Park
Wanderlust Coffee
Garnish & Gather
Fresh Harvest
Buttermilk Kitchen
Savi Provisions
The Mercantile
You can also order Treehouse Milk directly from their website {click here}. I strongly recommend trying the Pecan Milk but they also carry Almond (sweet and unsweet), Cashew, Macadamia and Cacao Milk. I’m going to try the Macadamia next time!
So why should you try almond milk? Almond milk, along with other nut milks, are packed with nutrients. Almonds are high in monounsaturated fats, the same type of health-promoting fats as are found in olive oil and avocados, which have been associated with reduced risk of heart disease. Five large human epidemiological studies, including the Nurses Health Study, the Iowa Health Study, the Adventist Health Study and the Physicians Health Study, all found that nut consumption is linked to a lower risk for heart disease. Researchers who studied data from the Nurses Health Study estimated that substituting nuts for an equivalent amount of carbohydrate in an average diet resulted in a 30% reduction in heart disease risk. Researchers calculated even more impressive risk reduction—45%—when fat from nuts was substituted for saturated fats (found primarily found in meat and dairy products).
In addition to their cholesterol-lowering effects, almonds’ ability to reduce heart disease risk may also be partly due to the antioxidant action of the vitamin E found in the almonds. In addition to healthy fats and vitamin E, a quarter-cup of almonds contains 62 mg of magnesium plus 162 mg of potassium. So enjoy your almonds and other nuts this holiday season!
Enjoy your Thanksgiving with your family! There will be a special, nutritious recipe tomorrow on the blog that will be perfect to have after indulging all weekend.
