Happy Monday, friends!
It’s time to plant some of my favorite flowers here in zone 8a! I find these to be rather easy to grow because they are low maintance. The biggest thing is to remember to protect young sprouts from frost & freezing temps. Fortunately here in Georgia that can be done with a simple frost cloth. So why do we have to plant these little beauties NOW? Certain bulbs need cold temperatures to trigger a biochemical process that causes them to flower in the spring. This period of cold temperatures is called vernalization. The ideal temp for chilling bulbs is under 40°F, and most spring-flowering bulbs need 12–16 weeks of this period. Here is the list shown in the video:
1. Anemones- my favorite flower to grow because despite looking so sweet and delicate they are super easy to grow and have an amazing vase life. I have purchased ALL mine from The Flower People and Hearts and Spade.
2. Ranunculus- these tiny rose like flowers have a great vase life and have a delicate, beautiful smell to them. They require a little more attention than anemones like regular fertilizing before blooming.
3. Lily of the Valley- I would grow more of these beauties if they weren’t so toxic. I grow mine in the front yard away from my farm animals and kiddos. They require full shade but overall easy to grow.
4. Tulips- super easy to grow and come in SO many beautiful varities! Spring is not complete without some tulips.
5. Daffodils- I always lump these with tulips because they grow so well together. Another SPRING staple!
6. Paperwhites- You can literally force them to grow ANYWHERE which makes them a great holiday gift. I personally just can’t stand how they smell so I like to grow them in the greenhouse.
Let me know what other flowers you love to grow in the winter and early spring!
