Happy Tuesdays pretty friends! Today I have a treat for you {literally}- a delicious post about one of my favorite restaurants to recommend- The Southern Gentleman. Located in the Shops Buckhead Atlanta, The Southern Gentleman celebrates every aspect of what it means to be from the South with a fresh, modern take on traditional dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. The bar program explores the artistry and history of classic Southern cocktails—everything from barrel-aged cocktails to bottled libations to adult beverages on tap, along with New World wines and craft beers and the “perfect” mint julep.
“We want this to feel like stepping into our home,” says co-owner Chris Hadermann. “If a friend were visiting Atlanta from New York, we want The Southern Gentleman to feel like the warm, welcoming place you’d want to take them to experience what it means to live the Southern lifestyle—a respect for the familiar traditions, that sophisticated yet unpretentious elegance, but also with a modern edge that makes it exciting and fresh. This is our take on proper Southern hospitality.”
From the minute you walk into the restaurant, you are taken back by the beautiful, elegant southern decor. Designed by New York’s Lacina Heitler, The Southern Gentleman features classic, Southern touches done in surprising, modern ways: seersucker window treatments, tufted camel leather booths, vintage plateware, white marble countertops, vaulted ceilings, herringbone floors, dramatic chandeliers, complete with an oversized portrait of Mark Twain painted by a commissioned local artist. If the weather permits, I strongly recommend sitting out on their porch to enjoy the view of Buckhead.
We started our afternoon with two delectable appetizers- deviled eggs, mussels and steak tartare. They were all the perfect way to start a southern lunch! I especially loved the steak tartare because it came with cottage fried potatoes, frisée, and black-eyed pea salad. It had crispy little pieces of fried black eye pea’s which added extra texture to the tartare.
Next we moved on to the main entrees- a delicious pan fried North Georgia trout that came seasoned with a gunpowder Cornmeal, Colbert Sauce, Carolina Long-Grain Dirty Rice, and Chow Chow Relish. It was very fresh and full of flavor. We also tried their most famous lunch staple, the ‘chicken fried’ chicken salad sandwich. After taking one bite I could immediately see why it was a staple lunch item. The chicken is perfectly fried then tossed into a light mayo dressing and served over a soft roll. It was honestly one of the most amazing sandwiches I have ever tried!
Last but certainly not least was the chocolate mini cake. It is served warm with a dash of whip cream on top! Every bite you take gets better and better! I especially loved how moist and perfectly baked the cake was. Absolutely divine!
Whether you are looking for a new romantic place to try, or you have out of town guest who want the Atlanta experience- The Southern Gentleman won’t disappoint. When you visit, I high recommend starting with the steak tartare, followed by their famous chicken sandwich and finish it off with a chocolate mini cake.
Enjoy!
