Hi friends! Today I am sharing all about our bunny, Marty. This post is long overdue and highly requested. I get many messages on Instagram asking about his setup and links. You can find all those in this post! I would like to start by saying I am new to owning bunnies and NOT an expert. I had bunnies growing up but it’s quite different when you are the adult in charge of them. I have learned a tremendous amount over the last 8 months either by experience or by research. I never bring home a new animal without doing extensive research. I found the education on Georgia House Rabbit Society the most helpful. They have a PDF called Bunny 101 which covers bunny basics. Highly recommend reading it BEFORE you bring home a new bunny.
About Marty
Marty is a holland lop which is considered a miniature breed of rabbit. Holland Lops are the result of breeding a larger French Lop rabbit with a smaller Netherland Dwarf rabbit. From what I have read, they are considered the “Golden Retrievers” of the bunny world which makes them a great option for families. Marty is a patient, sweet bunny but he does NOT like being held. This has been the case since we initially brought him home. He has never been aggressive but does let you know when he is uncomfortable or has had enough.
Marty’s Set Up
In case you can’t tell, Marty is a spoiled bun-bun. He has a hutch and a playpen where he spends most of his time. I put him in the hutch at night because he has a history of jumping out of the playpen and eating my picture frames. I bought THIS hutch that comes in a pretty wood color and then painted it. Inside the hutch, I have a smaller litter box, and a hay feeder with water and toys. I use Eaton Hemp Pet Bedding which is safe for bunnies and easy to clean.
As mentioned, he is only in the hutch at night. During the day he spends his time in his playpen or outside with us. Our yard is completely fenced in but never leave him outside unaccompanied since we have hawks. This playpen has been okay. It has served its purpose but I would recommend getting something taller so your bunny does not jump out. Inside the playpen, I put a washable rug, his hideout castle, a larger litter box that contains pine nuggets, hay and his food and water. If you are going to buy just ONE thing for your bunny I highly recommend the hideout castle. Bunnies love hiding so it’s natural for them to one to spend their time in there. And not to mention, it’s super cute and surprisingly great quality for the price.
Marty’s Routine
Marty’s typical day consists of getting fresh greens in his playpen, spending a little time in the yard or porch and sleeping. He is fully litter-trained now and will only go potty in his litter box. We do not let him run free inside the house because he has damaged various things including chewing up our internet cords. Here is a great list on what is safe to feed your bunny:
