Happy Thursday friends! Since it’s National Nutrition Month we’ve been talking about making healthy choices when it comes to what we eat. The second portion of living a healthier lifestyle is incorporating physical activity to our daily routines. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise (or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity) in order to improve overall cardiovascular health. Thirty minutes a day, five times a week is an easy goal to remember. You will also experience benefits even if you divide your time into two or three segments of 10 to 15 minutes per day. Are you meeting the minimum recommendation?
Physical activity is anything that makes you move your body and burn calories.
This includes things like climbing stairs or playing sports. Aerobic exercises benefit your heart, and include walking, jogging, swimming or biking. Strength and stretching exercises are best for overall stamina and flexibility.
So what’s an easy, free, social workout you can begin with? Walking! You could even join a local walking program or start one with your close friends. A walking program is flexible and boasts high success rates because people can stick with it. It’s easy for walking to become a regular and satisfying part of life. And you never know what it might lead to- perhaps a 5K? Or maybe even a marathon!
My personal favorite form of exercise is barre. I’m sure by now you have heard about Barre but if you have not- Barre is a workout that was designed specially for women. There are various forms of Barre but I enjoy Pure Barre and locally owned Pink Barre the most. I would say, if you are trying to shed some serious calories, Barre isn’t the best way to do it. Barre focuses more on toning and building core strength. Some Barres do include cardio but the classic Barre does not.
Something is always better than nothing!
And everyone has to start somewhere. Even if you’ve been sedentary for years, today is the day you can begin to make healthy changes in your life. If you don’t think you’ll make it for 30 or 40 minutes, set a reachable goal for today. You can work up toward your overall goal by increasing your time as you get stronger. Don’t let all-or-nothing thinking rob you of doing what you can every day.
You can wear whatever you want but choose something comfortable.
Remember that the gym is not a fashion show so wear whatever is comfortable for you. Some places {like Barre studios} recommend you should wear pants, leggings or capris that you are comfortable in (no shorts) and a top that covers your midriff. This will allow you to see faster results in your flexibility.
What fun activity will you be up to this weekend?
