Unless you are a qualified gemmologist, it is hard to tell the difference in the grades of stones, so when you buy a diamond, you should make sure that it has a certificate from the Gemological Institute of America or GIA.

The GIA was founded in 1931 by Robert M. Shipley, and the headquarters of this establishment are located in Carlsbad in California, USA. Since its establishment, the GIA has become the foremost authority on the knowledge, education, and also standards within the gem industry. If you have ever searched the internet for diamonds, you will have heard of the 4 C’s, which was introduced by the GIA in the 1940’s.

As well as the GIA, there are other institutes as well such as IGI, EGI, SCAN, and GEM. When you buy a certified diamond, you will also receive a certificate from one of the previously mentioned institutes, which will detail the properties of the stone including the grade and carat weight, as well as also certifying that it is conflict free. Each stone will be stringently tested in the laboratory before the certificate is issued, and when your diamond has a certificate from one of the gemmological institutes from around the world, you know exactly what you are buying. You will want to look at each company and make sure that they not only sell certified diamonds but also that they are certified or accredited so you can be sure that they are a professional company. You can contact each company through their website, or send them an email, and explain what it is that you are looking to purchase. Ask each company a few questions and see how they respond. You should be able to get a feel for which company you prefer, and then you can speak to them on the telephone, or even take a visit to their showroom if they have one. Take your time in making a decision, and choose the company that you feel most comfortable in dealing with, before investing in diamonds.

It is a good idea to research diamonds before buying them, and you can speak to each seller, in turn, playing dumb as if you know nothing about these precious stones. Doing this will allow you to judge which response is best and help you to make your choice of company. It will not be long till you have your certified diamond in your hands, ready to be made into a spectacular piece of jewelry.
