Happy Tuesday friends! Today on Instagram I shared a fun little reel featuring my top five chicken coop hacks. Over the years I have learned these little tricks to help keep my coop efficient and clean longer. Let’s break it down-
- Iron Hooks to hang food and water. This will keep both clean & your chickens from spilling everywhere. I found my hooks for 50% off at Hobby Lobby. Make sure you get the size I used in the video (9.45 x 1.97 x 5.12 in). In my experience, anything smaller did not work.
- Nesting Pads to keep nesting boxes clean and organized. Chickens love to “dig” up the area they lay their eggs so if you use chips they will go everywhere.
- Homemade Mite Spray- I learned how to make my mite spray from various fellow chicken ladies that swear by it. I always spray my nesting boxes, roosting bars and inside the coop in order to prevent mites from coming back. You can use various essential oils but I use this affordable peppermint oil in my spray to help make the coop smell refreshed. I love these glass spray bottles because they also come with a lid to seal the bottles with.
4. Lime- On top of the mite spray, I also sprinkle lime everywhere when I clean my coop. I use it inside the coop, in nesting boxes & all over the run. This helps with smell & kills nasty little bugs. I also use it after it rains to help keep the moisture down in the run. You can find lime at your local feed store or subscribe to First Saturday Lime.
5. Pine Nuggets- These are an affordable way to keep the run clean and dry. It helps with erosion and smells so nice! I also notice that my chickens love digging through it so it gives them something to do in the run.
I hope you find these hacks helpful! Let me know which one you end up using!
