Happy Wednesday friends! We are only 2 days away from celebrating Christmas so I wanted to share a delicious, holiday pear and rosemary gin cocktail ! This recipe would be perfect for tomorrow evening because it truly warms the soul. It features my favorite Bosc pears by Superfresh Growers. They are my favorite because they are perfectly sweet and pair great with just about anything. I also have the mentality that if you are going to drink alcohol why not pair it with something healthy? Speaking of healthy, let’s just quickly chat about pear nutrition!
Pear Nutrition
Aside from being absolutely delicious, pears are also packed with nutrients. They are one of the best fruit sources of fiber- containing a whole 5.5 grams per medium pear. That is very impressive! Because of it’s fiber content, pears help keep our GI tracts regular. Pears are also a great source of vitamin C, potassium, vitamin K, copper, magnesium, and B vitamins.
The following nutrition information is provided by the USDA for one medium pear-
- Calories:101
- Fat:0.3g
- Sodium:1.8mg
- Carbohydrates: 27g
- Fiber:5.5g
- Sugars: 17g
- Protein:0.6g
Pears, especially those with colorful skins, provide phytonutrients, or natural plant chemicals, like flavonoids. These compounds are known to help keep inflammation low by neutralizing free radicals—which can cause cell damage that in turn can lead to chronic disease such as heart disease and cancer.
Bosc Pear
As mentioned before, the Bosc pear from Superfresh Growers is my favorite. According to the experts at Superfresh Growers, Bosc pear has a more firm, dense flesh than other pear varieties. It retains its shape and texture better than other varieties, and its flavor is less likely to be overwhelmed by the use of spices like cinnamon, clove or nutmeg. This makes it ideal for cooking or for making delicious cocktails!
The Bosc pear also makes a great addition to any charcuterie board. The natural nutty, spicy notes of the Bosc pear partner well with Cabernet Sauvignon and Italian red wines, such as Barbaresco. Try pairing Bosc with Pecorino Romano, aged cheddar, or Manchego cheeses.
Holiday Pear and Rosemary Gin Cocktail Recipe
Pear-Rosemary Syrup Ingredients
- 3-4 medium pears
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 3/4 cup water
- 1 lemon
- 1 sprig of fresh rosemary (approx. 1 tsp if using dried rosemary)
Dice about 1 cup of pears (3-4 medium size pears should do) and add to saucepan over medium high heat. Cook pears for a few minutes until they start to soften. Add equal parts sugar and water (we used about 3/4 cup of sugar and water) to sauce pan and bring to a boil. Add lemon juice and sprig of rosemary. Reduce heat and simmer to desired consistency. We left it simmering for about 15-20 minutes to about the consistency of simple syrup.
Cocktail Ingredients
- 3 ounces gin
- 3 ounces elderflower liqueur (we used St-Germaine)
- 0.5 ounces of pear-rosemary syrup
- Approx. 1 cup crushed ice
- 1 Egg white
In a cocktail shaker, combine all ingredients and shake vigorously. Pour into glass and garnish with pear and/or rosemary sprig.
Enjoy!
